Hazelwood Resident Peggy Hannah is appealing the zoning definition of the new jail build being classified as "Government Services". It was discovered Town Planner Elizabeth Teague is trying to force the definition of Government Services on the new jail construction because she says the incarceration is "short term" and not really a jail, so it fits the Government Services zoning district. This is an interesting case and a well written appeal. Come watch the outcome on Tuesday, March 7th 5:30 pm at the Zoning Board's Quasi Judicial Hearing, the board room above the police department on Main Street, Waynesville. Maybe the County Commissioners should have listened to Commissioner Terry Ramey when he explained the current jail, that the county is still paying payments on, was specially constructed by a company that designed pods to be added as more space is needed, which would have cost the taxpayers so much less in taxes.

The appeal of the Jail was heard and the Zoning Board voted to allow the construction of the jail under the Government Services Zoning. Government Services Zoning doesn't allow for a correctional facility. Attorney Frank Queen presented evidence that the Detention Center only allowed for short term detention of inmates before they are convicted of a crime, therefore it wasn't a correctional facility. Other evidence was presented that currently six inmates are serving their sentences after being convicted and after the new jail addition there could be any number of inmates serving their sentences. The Zoning Board still decided to find the Government Services Zoning was the proper zoning and they voted to allow Town Planner Elizabeth Teague's decision to stand. Peggy Hannah made it clear she wasn't against the jail, but she wanted to make sure the proper zoning was used.
