Heartbreaking News for Haywood County the Paper Mill is Closing

As we start a new day, keep the employees and families of the Canton Paper Mill in your prayers. They received the horrible news yesterday that shattered their lives and changed the course of everthing they planned for their future. So many people are hurting this morning and Haywood County grieves with you. We all know or have family members who have been affected. When you were hired at "The Mill" that was going to be a place where you would work for a lifetime and retire with a comfortable pension with benefits. How many were close to retirement and just lost that dream? How many people heard your family member say, " that's the smell of money"? " We never complained about the smell because it was our livelihood. Our parents and grandparents worked there". Comments like these are commonplace for our citizens. Even our local Bluegrass band, "Balsam Range" sang the Papertown song we loved. Today, as we try to grasp the magnitude of what just happened to these people, who also went through the flood of 2021, be kind to one another and thank God for another beautiful day.

Keep in mind, liberal Vicki Hyatt from the Mountaineer, a corporation is what kept the mill running for 120 years and another large corporation is what Haywood County needs to survive. Haywood County Commissioners should be readdressing economic development in Haywood County. The commissioners and David Francis, Economic Development Developer, have a new economic plan in mind that only focuses on "workforce housing" with a plan to completely stop economic growth of any kind. Give Haywood County another large corporation that pays a good wage with benefits David Francis, Economic growth developer!
