**The Cruso Community is facing the reality of a "Planned Spray" of over 2000 Acres with Splat GM-O, which lists 87% of the ingredients as "Inert". Also, many believe that the Spraying for Gypsy Moths is not necessary. Please find information below about "Inert" ingredients and information about the doubtful benefits of spraying for these moths at all....

Emotions were high as the citizens of Cruso voiced their concerns about the aerial spraying of the compound called Splat GM-O from airplanes above their community. The government officials quickly explained the biological spray was totally harmless to humans, animals and plants and would not contaminate the water, but the insert from the manufacturer's label told an entirely different story. Even the government officials had to admit one worker who had handled the biological agent would draw the Gypsy Moth to him over 20 years after he had handled the chemical pheromone, which shows the lasting effects of the chemical in the human body. The insert is located in the link below. Citizens asked great questions, from why was Cruso the only town with the moth, to why wouldn't the area of National Park around Cruso also have moths, so why can't they spray there first and check Cruso again next year? Every citizen in the full courtroom had concerns and none of them wanted the spraying to happen. It became clear the government officials were just going through the motions and this wasn't a question and answer session that would sway their opinion one way or the other. They intended to spray the community of Cruso no matter what. At least the citizens were able to convince the government officials to have one more public meeting for the citizens of Cruso before they move forward with the spraying. One Cruso resident said it best. Apparently the quote, "our government of the people, for the people, by the people", doesn't exist anymore. Keep watching for the date of the next community meeting! Representative Mark Pless, who grew up in the Bethel area, didn't even attend the meeting.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services is holding a public meeting March 21, 2023, from 6:00 to 7:30 at the Haywood County Historic Courthouse, 285 Main Street, Waynesville. There is more to spraying this biological agent in Cruso than the information the State of North Carolina has given you!

On Wednesday March 15th, State Representative Mark Pless and Sara Lalk from the Plant Industry Division of the NCDA&CS announced a public meeting on the spongy moth. This invasive species is in areas in the county, mostly in Cruso. The time frame of the treatment, what exactly the treatment does to insects, the impact to the region if left untreated, and more will be discussed. Questions from community members will be taken.

During the meeting of March 15th, the majority of Cruso citizens were against the treatment that could have other repercussions to water, animals and humans.
