The Mountaineer Newspaper took longer than expected to post a disappointing article, entitled, "Drinking on the Streets of Downtown Waynesville is off the Table for now". In the very first paragraph, staff writer Payton Renegar called 28 well informed and well mannnered speakers a "Hostile Crowd". She also called the crowd "raucous" which is making or constituting a disturbingly harsh and loud noise. We're not sure what meeting she was in, but the only loud noise was short periods of clapping after each speaker walked back to their seat... no vocal sounds at all. There were no shouts and jeers from the crowd, except for when the only ONE very rude speaker named Jeremy Stevens got up to admonish every other speaker and person in the room, and even called out the pastors who had spoken, saying the bible gives the OK to make a keg full of alcohol and drink it. He told the Council members to ignore the whole room full of people and the speakers because they were liars and just vote like other cities who have implemented drinking in their towns. He went over his time and some in the crowd stated, "times up"! Wer'e not sure who this Payton Renegar with the Mountaineer is, but we want our Becky Johnson back. This was not a fair and balanced article. We call foul!
We have requested a recording of the meeting so we can post it for others to hear. We are very proud of the wonderful crowd of citizens who came out to stand up for keeping Waynesville safe and beautiful! Thank you citizens of Haywood County!
