Gary Caldwell struck Joey Reece in front of over 100 people, on live TV and in front of three police officers. Gary Caldwell lost it over a simple question about who was more responsible for helping get the Frog Level vagrant problem under control. Gary's outburst was totally uncalled for and he did aplologize for it later. Joey Reece is to be commended for keeping his composure and not charging Gary Caldwell for assault because he was clearly guilty of an assault including threats.

Proof shows Gary Caldwell had shown concern, like everyone else in the Town of Waynesville, about the growing problem of vagrants camping in Frog Level and the increase in arrests without solutions, but Joey Reece, who was a candidate for Alderman in 2019, called a meeting in Frog Level, to discuss the problem with business owners and key stakeholders, and accurately blamed Judge Letts, Pre-Trial Release Program, or Catch and Release for the increase in vagrant crime. The Pre-Trial Release Program in Haywood County, which was the first in the State of North Carolina, would prove to be the single worse thing that happened in Haywood County to increase crime, especially property crime, and Joey Reece was the first to forcast the failure and downfall of the program. Mayor Caldwell or any of the current radical left Aldermen, have never spoken out against the Pre-Trial Release program over the past four years.

Joey Reece also stated, the place where soup kitchens and homeless facilities are located are very important. They should never be located in key shopping areas where families with children would be visiting.

On the other hand, Alderman candidate Joey Reece said it was never a good idea to place these types of services within one of the town’s three main business districts.

“Show me anyone that thinks it’s a good idea to locate these services — no matter how needed — in their business districts?” he said. “We can’t let good intentions cloud good judgment and this is not good judgment. Let us not forget, this is more than a public health crisis, it’s a public safety crisis and that’s what we’re not addressing.”

Reece has taken the toughest stance on the issue, making cleaning up the town his chief campaign platform.
“I think we have to and are obligated to use any and all legal, Constitutional means to solve this problem.”

He said the Open Door is not in a good location.
“Show me any place, anywhere or anybody that thinks it is a good idea to locate these services, no matter how needed they are, in one of your business districts. These folks are all good intentioned, but you can’t let good intentions cloud good judgement.”

Reece said that Judge Brad Letts has created a nightmare with his pre-trial program, dubbed by law enforcement as a “catch and release.” The recent break-in at Central Elementary is a classic example. The suspect had been arrested on separate charges of shoplifting and breaking into storage units mere hours before breaking into the school.

“They take him in and he beats the police officer out of the jail.He had a 40-caliber pistol stuffed in his waistband that he had stole from another B&E. Why is this guy still on the streets?

Posted below is a letter from a business owner in Frog Level supporting Joey Reece for Mayor. She gives Joey credit for supporting business owners in Frog Level with their homeless and crime.

Joey, I met you when I was a shop owner in Frog Level, struggling with the street people making messes, destruction, and their harassing my customers on a daily basis. You were the only one that cared enough to continually come by and lend an ear and give me much needed advice. Without you I probably would have given up on Frog Level much earlier but I absolutely loved that historical part of Waynesville . Thank you for your support and now it is my time to support you. During this incident with our mayor you proved just who you are and I have total respect for you. Best of luck ….you are definitely what this town needs !
