Our local government created a FALSE STUDY that "concluded" we need affordable housing. The people who performed this fake study do not align with the people of Waynesville. Rob Hites and Elizabeth Teague presented the Aldermen with the conclusion that Waynesville needs affordable housing and the local papers piled on to create pressure for the elected representatives to support increasing affordable housing. This fact pattern shows the elected representatives (Aldermen) are not representing those who elected them -- or else they would push back on those who would create such a false study and the fake conclusion they derived.
Even after it's now well-known that the study was illegitimate, the elected Aldermen are STILL in support of increasing affordable housing:

One might wonder WHY people would pressure elected Aldermen to increase affordable housing and to go so far as to create a false study toward that. Well, it comes down to Haywood/Waynesville is showing signs of leaning more Republican. And it's commonly known that "low income affordable housing" types typically don't vote Republican. You can see that opportunities to make current housing more affordable isn't noticed at all. It's not the affordable housing they want -- but NET NEW voters that will live in that.
The bottom line is the Aldermen don't see how they shouldn't be in agreement and taking advice from Hites and Teague. That is evidenced by the MISTAKE of accepting a false study concluding that we need affordable housing AND the doubling down on that mistake in the article referenced above.
The false study:
